Farmers protest: SC asks Centre to consider putting farm laws on hold to aid talks

The top court today will be hearing all the petitions filed relating to the farmers’ protest.

Supreme-Court Hold-Farm-Laws Farmers-Protest

The farmers protesting against the three farm laws passed by the Centre during the September monsoon parliamentary session has entered its 22nd continuous day.

The protesting farmers have demanded to repeal all the three laws and will accept nothing less, while the Centre continues to back the laws calling them as revolutionary for the Indian farmers.

The apex court has resumed the hearing of appeal that sought authorities clearing of the protesters from the Delhi border as it's causing huge traffic issues. The CJI during the hearing observed that the farmers have the fundamental right to protest in a democracy, but it must not endanger life and property.

CJI on the farm laws matter says, "We are also Indian, we're familiar with the plight of farmers and are sympathetic to their cause. You (farmers) have to only alter the way the protest is going. We will ensure you can plead your case & thus we are thinking of forming a committee.”

CJI says notice will be sent to all protesting farmers' bodies and suggests that the case be placed before a vacation bench of the court during this winter holiday.

The Attorney General states that a notice will be served to all the farmers’ representatives who have been part of the government talks so far.

Supreme Court has asked the Centre to explore the possibility of putting enacted legislations on hold, directing the Attorney General if the government can assure the Court that it will not take any executive action on implementation of the law till the court hears the matter.
