Why do we celebrate International Workers’ Day?

International Workers’ Day is also known as May Day or Labour Day. The day is celebrated on May 1 annually to pay respect and honor to the helpers whose contribution makes our daily work easy and manageable. The day also highlights the everyday struggles of workers across the world.

The day originated following the labor union movement, where workers gathered to protest for an eight-hour workday. The movement that took place at the Haymarket affair in Chicago in 1886 is considered to be the originator of the day. The day is considered to be a powerful reminder for the worker’s rights and fair wages. It also ensures the provision of dignity and respect for all workers.

To mark the day and highlight the importance of the day, it is marked by rallies, marches, and events like fancy dress competitions, which raise awareness regarding the efforts of workers.
