As monsoon 2025 is slowly and steadily peaking in Himachal Pradesh and its nearby states, a major accident was averted recently. A five-storey building collapsed in the Mathu Colony area of Shimla, following continuous heavy rainfall in the region since last night. Fortunately, no casualties were reported as the building had already been vacated the previous evening.
According to locals, deep cracks had appeared at the base of the structure, allegedly due to ongoing four-lane road construction work in the area. The cracks raised concerns of structural instability, prompting precautionary evacuation before the collapse.
However, the incident has raised alarm among residents of three adjacent buildings, which are now believed to be at risk. Many residents have begun vacating their homes, fearing similar collapses.
Local residents expressed frustration, claiming that despite the evident danger, no administrative or disaster management officials have reached the site yet. They blamed the ongoing road construction for destabilizing the land, leading to the collapse. As per reports, authorities are now assessing the damage and the stability of surrounding structures. The incident has once again raised serious questions about the impact of infrastructure projects on residential safety in hilly terrains like Shimla.

(Himachal Pradesh Rainfall Prediction) The agency further predicted that 'light to moderate rain very likely at few places with isolated intense spells and moderate thunderstorm/lightning very likely at isolated places in Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Una, Hamirpur, Bilaspur, Solan, Shimla, and Sirmaur districts.'
