Raja and Sonam Raghuvanshi reached Guwahati in Assam from Indore via Bengaluru. After visiting the Kamakhya temple, they both left for Shillong on 22 May.
They stayed at Shipra Homestay in Shillong's Mawlakhiyat village, and on the same day, they left their luggage at the hotel and went out on a scooty. In the CCTV footage, both of them were seen coming out of the hotel on a scooty where Sonam was seen wearing a raincoat and white shirt. Both of them rented a scooter to visit the hill station and went to see the famous 'Living Root Bridge' in Nongriat village. Then reached the Double Decker Bridge.
After doing a homestay in the village, they went to the Double Decker waterfall on the morning of 23 May. During this time, Sonam spoke to her mother-in-law on the phone for the last time in which Sonam told her mother-in-law about the plan to travel and to keep a fast. After which, both of their mobiles were switched off. On the same day, the village head told the police that an unclaimed bike is parked near the Golden Piece Dhaba in the Sohrim area.
When all the contacts with Raja were broken, the family members in Indore got suspicious, and Raja's brother Vipin reached Shillong. A missing person report was filed with the police, after which the search began. During this time, the family members found information about the people who rented the scooty through a Google search.
11 days later, on June 2, Raja Raghuvanshi's body was found in a ditch about 100 feet deep near Visavdong waterfall, 20 kilometers away from Nongriat village.
