The ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 is indeed turning out to be memorable. Courtesy of many records broken and many records made, ICC World Cup 2023 in India has grabbed global headlines. On Monday, a major controversy erupted after Sri Lankan allrounder Angelo Mathews became the first cricketer in the history of the tournament to be given out as 'Timed Out'. Angelo Mathews's Timed Out dismissal took place at the Arun Jaitely Stadium in New Delhi when Sri Lanka locked horns with Bangladesh.

The incident took place after Sadeera Samarawickrama was dismissed and Mathews took a longer time than usual to arrive on the pitch. As a result, Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan appealed to the umpires, and therefore, the officials were left with no choice but to give the Sri Lankan all-rounder out.

Notably, Angelo Mathews mistakenly took a faulty helmet with himself and as a result, he took much more time than usual to arrive on the pitch. Mathews tried to explain to the umpires, still, the umpires were left with no choice as Shakib did not withdraw the appeal. As per the rules, a batter needs to come inside the stadium to bat under 2 minutes.

Reacting to the incident, a fan wrote, "HISTORY IN DELHI....!!! Angelo Mathews becomes the first cricketer in history to be out on 'timed out'."

Another user wrote, "Angelo Mathews leisurely walked out to the middle which took time, he had some issue with the helmet. He didn't reach the crease and called for another helmet. Bangladesh appealed for a time-out and the umpires followed the rules."
