The police in Punjab's Ludhiana has arrested a soldier, identified as Gurcharan Singh, for allegedly killing his wife and then chopping her body into pieces and burying it in an attempt to hide the crime.
The case came to light when the deceased woman's father lodged a missing complaint with the police and said that the woman went missing three days after meeting Gurcharan Singh.
According to information received from the police, Gurcharan Singh was the woman's second husband, but the two were living separately due to marital disputes. On August 6, the woman, identified as Kuljit Kaur, met Gurcharan and three days later, on August 9, she went missing under mysterious circumstances, following which her father lodged the complaint.
Police suspected Gurcharan and asked him to join the investigation. However, Gurcharan, who was posted in Ladakh at the time said that he was undergoing treatment for slip disk and cannot come for the probe. The police then wrote to his unit in Ladakh, following which Gurcharan came to Punjab and confessed to killing his wife along with another accomplice.
He said that he killed his wife by choking her with a dupatta near a canal. He and his friend then chopped her body into pieces and buried it in a pond. After hiding the body, his friend fled and went for duty in Ladakh.
The police then reached the spot if the crime and search the place for traces of the woman's body, but they could find a bone and a bangle of the woman.
Further investigation is ongoing to recover parts of the woman's body as well as for Gurcharan's aide.
Soon after, Gurcharan was arrested by the police.
