The arrest of Bikram Singh Majithia has become a massive talking point in the Punjab Political fraternity. On Thursday, Majithia was sent to 7-days Vigilance remand by a Mohali court for allegedly laundering more than Rs 540 crore of "drug money". Following that, former Punjab DGP Siddharth Chattopadhyaya approached the Vigilance Bureau, and the controversy exploded.

Speaking to the media after meeting vigilance officials for over an hour, Chattopadhyaya said, "We had solid evidence against Majithia when the FIR was filed in 2021 under my supervision. He received financial gain and direct payoffs from drug cartels. The links are 100% proven."

Chattopadhyaya clarified that he wasn’t at the vigilance office to record a formal statement, but to share the full background of the case to strengthen the prosecution. As DGP at the time the 2021 NDPS case was filed, he had overseen the investigation.

Former DGP levels serious allegations against Majithia

The ex-DGP said the case against Majithia was buried when he was a powerful minister during the SAD-BJP government. Despite strong evidence even then, no action was taken.

Chattopadhyaya claimed that the Punjab and Haryana High Court had constituted an SIT, which submitted three reports. He submitted a fourth, which remains confidential. He also alleged deep-rooted corruption in the force, naming dismissed inspector Inderpreet and absconding AIG Rajjit Singh for links to the drug network.

The former top cop of Punjab further said that external funds were routed through fake shell firms linked to Majithia, forming part of crucial financial evidence in the case.

Fresh case likely to be lodged against Majithia

A new legal trouble is looming over Bikram Singh Majithia. As per sources in the known development, the Vigilance team has filed a complaint accusing him of obstructing an official raid at his residence. According to the complaint, Majithia allegedly threatened officials during the operation, attempted to destroy key evidence, and provoked his supporters to create a confrontation with the raiding team. The vigilance team had received prior intelligence indicating the presence of crucial documents related to the case at the location.

It is alleged that in a bid to stop the search, Majithia’s supporters were deliberately mobilized to delay the proceedings and physically obstruct the officials. The vigilance team believes that the interference was a calculated move to prevent the collection of vital evidence and disrupt the ongoing investigation.

Based on the seriousness of the allegations, a new case might be registered against Majithia under charges including obstruction of justice, destruction of evidence, criminal conspiracy, and incitement to violence against public officials.
