South Florida: Giant African snail turns Broward County into quarantine zone in fear of disease spread

In an unusual incident, a South Florida community had to be quarantined after a Giant African Snail was spotted in the region. As per reports, parts of Broward County had to be declared a quarantine zone after the Giant African Snail triggered panic in the region. The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services stated that the detrimental agricultural pest was spotted in early June this year, and to eliminate or to catch it the agency is using a special type of snail bait to eradicate the species. Notably, the last sighting of the Giant African Snail in Florida was in 2022 when more than 1,000 were reported in a community north of Tampa. As per reports, the Giant African Snail is known to be destructive to plants which can be problematic to the state’s nearly $8 billion agriculture industry. Not only this, the Florida State Department has also issued a warning saying that snails can pose a health risk to humans and lead to meningitis. Now, again the question arises what is meningitis? As per CDC, Meningitis is an inflammation (swelling) of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord. A bacterial or viral infection of the fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord usually causes swelling.

Coming back to Giant African Snail in South Florida, the FDACS’s Division of Plant Industry was quoted saying that the pesticide it’s using to eradicate the pest is safe around crops and will make the snails susceptible to dehydration. Furthermore, the state’s agriculture department did not say where it believes the Broward County snail originated, but previously authorities tied the species to the pet trade.
