Stolen Real Story

Directed by Karan Tejpal and backed by Anurag Kashyap, Kiran Rao, Nikkhil Advani, and Vikramaditya Motwane, Stolen is a crime thriller that revolves around two brothers, Gautam Bansal, Raman Bansal, and one woman, Jhumpa Mahato, whose 5-month-old baby gets stolen from a railway platform. The movie is said to be inspired by real life infamous mob lynching case of Niloptal Das and Abhijeet Nath.

The character of Gautam Bansal is played by actor Abhishek Banerjee, Raman Bansal is played by Subham Vardhan, and Jhumpa is played by actress Mia Maelzer.

The movie starts with a woman stealing Jhumpa's 5-month-old girl from the platform while she was asleep. On the other hand, things unfold in such a way that both Gautam and Raman get entangled in the case. At first, Raman was accused of stealing the baby; however, things got clarified. In the meantime, someone filmed the video terming the Bansal brothers and Jhuma as kidnappers of a baby from the railway station.

Real-life inspiration behind Stolen on Prime Video

Niloptal Das a 29-year-old sound engineer originally from Assam, residing in Mumbai, who had previously studied audio engineering at SAE Institute in Mumbai. Passionate about music and the outdoors, he played the Assamese gogona (traditional mouth harp) at international events and often went on nature retreats.

On the other hand,  Abhijeet Nath, a  30-year-old from Guwahati who had pursued engineering studies before moving into business. A nature and animals enthusiast—especially fond of breeding ornamental fish—he joined Nilotpal on a trip to record sounds at Kangthilangso waterfall.

Both were lynched near Panjuri Kacharigaon in Karbi Anglong, after being falsely accused of child abduction based on viral rumours. The mob, reportedly about 250 people strong, attacked and killed them, despite their pleas of innocence. Nilotpal was even heard saying, “I am Assamese... believe me”
