The much-awaited event of the year, Oscars 2024 will go underway on March 10, 2024. While Oscars 2024 nominations have been finalized already, India has missed the bus to Los Angeles's Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood. However, there is a Delhi-born woman named Nisha Pahuja who has kept India's hopes for the 2024 Oscars alive. Created by Nisha Pahuja, the India-based documentary feature, To Kill a Tiger has been nominated in the Best Documentary Feature category at the 96th Oscars. The nominations were announced on Tuesday, January 23 (IST). Now, the question arises who is Nisha Pahuja and what is her To Kill a Tiger all about? Below is everything you need to know- 

 

Who is Nisha Pahuja?

 

Nisha Pahuja is a Delhi-born documentary filmmaker. As per reports, Nisha Pahuja currently resides in Toronto, Canada. Nisha Pahuja shifted to Canada with her family in the 1970s and completed her studies in English Literature at the University of Toronto. She worked as a researcher on the CBC documentary Some Kind of Arrangement and later joined hands with Canadian filmmakers John Walker and Ali Kazimi. She rose to fame after her 2012 documentary film, The World Before Her. It is pertinent to mention here that To Kill a Tiger had earlier won the Amplify Voices Award for Best Canadian Feature Film at Toronto International Film Festival 2022.

 

Talking about Nisha Pahuja's To Kill a Tiger, the Oscar-nominated feature documentary is based in Jharkhand, India. It revolves around the story of Ranjit and his battle for justice as his daughter was sexually assaulted by three men. The official synopsis of the film reads, "In To Kill a Tiger, Ranjit, a farmer in Jharkhand, India, takes on the fight of his life when he demands justice for his 13-year-old daughter, the survivor of sexual assault. In India, where a rape is reported every 20 minutes and conviction rates are less than 30 percent, Ranjit’s decision to support his daughter is virtually unheard of, and his journey unprecedented."

 

Other nominees in the Oscar 2024 Best Documentary Feature are Bobi Wine: The People's President, The Eternal Memory, Four Daughters, and 20 Days in Mariupol. Hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, the 96th Academy Awards will be held on March 11 (IST).
