In a major shocking incident, a cop thrashed a woman bank employee in Surat on Monday. The incident took place in the Canara Bank with a female employee in its Saroli branch on Monday.  The entire incident was caught on the bank’s close circuit camera. Though it is unclear what has led to the assault, the constable, who was in plain clothes, was seen arguing with the bank staff before barging into a cubicle and pushing the woman.

After the video went viral on social media, Union Finance Minister intervened in the matter. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday said nothing should threaten the safety and dignity of bank employees after a Canara Bank female employee was assaulted by a police constable in Surat, Gujarat.

The minister took up the matter with Commissioner of Police, Surat City, R B Brahmbhatt, following which the constable was suspended.

"My office is being informed that the Commissioner of Police visited @canarabank's Saroli branch and assured staff of full cooperation; the accused police constable is placed under suspension," Nirmala Sitharaman tweeted.

As per reports, the cop has now been suspended and also arrested. A case was registered at Puna police station in Surat on Tuesday under Indian Penal Code Sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 504 (intentional insult to provoke breach of peace), a police official said.
