After joining AAP yesterday, the much-awaited announcement of ex-congress MLA Sushil Kumar Rinku’s ticket, confirming his candidacy for the upcoming election cycle has been made today. Rinku is now seen as a trump card at the disposal of AAP in its attempt to wrest the marginal advantage that Congress enjoys in 9 constituencies of the Jalandhar district. Having surrendered 5 of those to the congress and failing to make a large impact in the previous elections, AAP is looking at closing the deficit, not only in Jalandhar but in the Doaba region on the whole. Rinku could play a huge role in this regard bringing a large vote bank from the Jalandhar west constituency where he enjoys the support of the Dalit community.

Who is Sushil Kumar Rinku?

The former Congress MLA has been an active member of NSUI since 1990. In 1992, during the boy-cot of elections by the Akali Dal, Sushil Kumar Rinku was a booth level worker. It was in the year 1994 that Sushil Kumar Rinku was elected as President of Shri Guru Ravidas cultural Society at D.A.V College Jalandhar.

In 2002, he was appointed by the party to the position of level worker for the Lok Sabha Elections. In 2006, he was elected as the Municipal Councilor and won by 2500 votes. Now he brings his expertise and his vast experience to the AAP.

Sushil Kumar Rinku’s family as long-standing ties with the Indian National Congress spanning four and a half decades. His uncle and father were part of almost every assembly and parliament election. During the emergency in 1977, his entire family was imprisoned for supporting the Indian National Congress.

Sushil Kumar Rinku’s lateral move to the AAP reveals another chink in the armor of the Congress making him a possible game changer in the current political landscape of the Jalandhar constituency. Jalandhar Lok Sabha Elections are the ultimate test for the Aam Aadmi Party. Also, it is a big challenge for AAP to win this election because after coming to power, they lost the By-election in Sangrur against SAD’s Simranjit Singh Mann. If somehow AAP loses Jalandhar Lok Sabha Elections, then it can have a grave impact on Arvind Kejriwal in the upcoming PM elections.
