Vivekananda: the greatest spiritual leader of India

Swami Vivekananda, the chief disciple of Indian mystic Ramakrishna, is one of the greatest spiritual leaders of India. Vivekananda was born in Calcutta on January, 12th 1863; his interest from childhood remained immensely inclined towards religion and spirituality.

He was the philosopher who presented the ideals of ‘Vedanta’ and ‘Yoga’ to the western world. Well-versed in Philosophy, literature and history, he consolidated the reputation of Hinduism as one of the major world religions in the late 19th century. 

Vivekananda’s insightful speeches on patriotism and spirituality have inspired millions of youth. Later, many thinkers and leaders from over the country have taken up his path to lead a life of peace and purity. Every year his birthday is celebrated as ‘National Youth Day’.

One of the most important and recognizable events in Swami Vivekananda’s life was his iconic speech on religious tolerance at the World's Parliament of Religions in Chicago in the year 1893. In his speech, he appealed to leaders from all over the world to end fanaticism.

He passed away on July 4th, 1902 at the early age of 39 years.
