Jalandhar, Ludhiana, and many other districts of Punjab received torrential rainfall on Thursday morning. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) of the Chandigarh unit had been predicting thunderstorms in multiple districts of Punjab, but no heavy showers were taking place. Finally, on Thursday, Jalandhar and other districts of Punjab were hit by heavy showers. As a result, it was expected that Punjab would finally get some relief from high daytime temperatures. However, on Friday morning, the weather flipped again, and sunny weather yet again reminded the residents that intense heat from summer is still here.
In the meantime, IMD Chandigarh on Thursday issued a fresh prediction. In their prediction, IMD had clearly stated that there would be no rainfall in Jalandhar, Ludhiana, and many other nearby districts on June 27. However, the weather department has issued a thunderstorm alert in Jalandhar, Ludhiana, and other districts of Punjab from June 28. Why was Punjab not receiving rainfall despite the IMD's prediction?
Despite repeated IMD's alerts, monsoon activity has slowed down not only in Punjab but also in Himachal Pradesh. As per reports, Punjab typically receives monsoon rain from the southwest monsoon winds. If these currents are weak or delayed, due to changes in the Arabian Sea or Bay of Bengal systems, expected rainfall may not materialize.
As per the weather department, monsoon entered Punjab 48 hours ago, and since then, it has been stuck in Pathankot. There is little chance of its movement even on Tuesday. The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert regarding rain in 5 districts of Punjab today. All five districts are adjacent to Himachal Pradesh.
