The film revolves around the true story of Maya Kowalski, 10 years old, vibrant and full of life tween who started facing a series of ailments: Her feet started cramping and curling inwards with never-ending coughs, continuous headaches, and lesions on her limbs. Her helpless parents, Jack and Beata, were desperate for not even a cure but a simple diagnosis of what was happening to their daughter.

They get her admitted to John Hopkins All Children’s Hospital due to her rare illness. But as the medical team tries to diagnose her illness, it leads to an inquiry on her parents about the truths of the Kowalski family that held all of them together. And suddenly, Maya was in state custody as the physicians suspected her mother, Beata of child abuse. The emotional wreck that her parents went through wanting to bring her daughter home desperately is unimaginable. This led to a journey for which no one was prepared.

Maya Kowalski's story is one that touched the hearts of people around the world. At the age of 17, Maya is bravely sharing her story in the form of a documentary as how her mother was falsely accused of Munchausen syndrome by proxy (MSP) by the hospital. She shares how she never saw her mother again and was medically kidnapped. Her mother was not allowed to meet her. Later, a court-ordered psychological evaluation that proved that Beata did not have MSP, but she began “deteriorating” while away from her daughter. She was not even allowed to give her daughter a hug. After 87 days apart, Beata ended her life at age 43. “I’m sorry,” she wrote in an email found following her passing. “But I no longer can take the pain being away from Maya and being treated like a criminal. I cannot watch my daughter suffer in pain and keep getting worse.”
