Clearing the clouds over the much discussed whether Rings of Power is a prequel of the Lords of the Ring or not, the former’s showrunner why is the ROP not made in the line of the much-loved Amazon Prime classic.

Amazon reserved the production costs for The Rings of Power at a whopping $1 billion making it the most expensive T.V series to be ever made.

As soon as the rights were reserved, McKay and J.D. Payne were brought on as showrunners. Other than Payne and McKay, the creative team also includes Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom's J.A. Bayona, who directs the first episodes and acts as an executive producer.

Based on the history of Middle-earth, Rings of Power is established in the second age, thousands of years before the events that unfolded in Lords of the Rings, however, with dates approaching near to its release the debate is on high whether or not Rings of Power is the prequel of Lords of the Ring.

Putting an end to the discussion the ROP showrunner Patrick McKay in an interview explained why is the coming series not a prequel to the much-loved series on middle-earth. He said instead of making a smaller version of Middle-Earth, McKay aimed tried to establish a story that must stand completely on its own.

He added, “We were not interested in doing a show about the younger version of the same world you knew, where it's a little bit of a prequel. We wanted to go way, way, way back and find a story that could exist on its own two feet.

This was one that we felt hadn't been told on the level and the scale and with the depth that we felt it deserved.” In the due course of the interview, McKay drew the line of distinction emphasizing why it shouldn’t be compared to the other.

Many, however, say despite multiple efforts coming from the showrunners, Rings of Power will still function largely as a predecessor to Lord of the Rings by exploring multiple origin stories, such as the forging of the fabled rings and the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron.

But why is the debate prevailing over the latest yet-to-be-released series is being associated with others? The answer to this hovers around the technicality of the rights issued for its presentation.

For many legal aspects in the scene, the rights of the series are limited by Warner Bros. However, how much one tries to get over this The Rings of Power has been produced in a fashion similar to Jackson’s style of movies that is most likely to evolve the talks about linking the two.
