Coronavirus in India: Third positive case surfaces in Punjab,  nation's total count near 250

An elderly woman with recent travel history to the UK has tested positive for coronavirus in Mohali, an official said on Friday. This took the total number of positive cases in the state to three.

Mohali Deputy Commissioner Girish Dayalan confirmed on Friday that the 69-year-old was diagnosed positive by the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) here. He said that the samples of two of her family members have been collected for testing.

The first patient in the state, a resident of Italy, is undergoing treatment in Amritsar, while the second patient, 70, belonging to SBS Nagar, died on Thursday.

Doctors said that he was suffering from diabetes and hypertension and was initially home quarantined.

He reported to a government hospital on March 18 with a complaint of chest pain. His samples were sent to the PGIMER which were found positive. The cause of death was cardiac arrest on the day of hospitalisation.

The cases of novel coronavirus are increasing in India rapidly with the count crossing 200. India has also reported five deaths due to Covid-19. Kanika Kapoor has become the first Bollywood celebrity to test positive for coronavirus in India. 

Amid growing concern over the spread of coronavirus, Maharashtra has placed four cities of Mumbai, Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), Pune, Pimpri Chinchwad and Nagpur under clampdown. Meanwhile, the Delhi government has shut shopping malls. 

PM Modi has announced that the entire nation will observe 'janta curfew' this Sunday (March 22) from 7 am to 9 pm.
