3 arrested in Muradnagar roof collapse case, death toll climbs 25

Three people, including a junior engineer and a municipality executive officer, have been held in connection with the Muradnagar cremation ground roof collapse case.

An FIR has been registered in connection with the Muradnagar roof collapse event, while three arrests have been made including a junior engineer, Chandra Pal, a municipality executive, Niharika Singh and supervisor Ashis, the police said on Monday. 

The contractor, Ajay Tyagi, who is another accused in the case, is absconding. 

All these culprits, Ajay Tyagi, Niharika Singh, Chandra Pal and Ashis were booked under relevant sections of the IPC, including 304 (causing death by negligence).

The incident occurred on Sunday when the roof of a shelter at a cremation ground in Uttar Pradesh's Muradnagar collapsed taking about 25 lives whereas many were injured in the incident. The wounded have been admitted to a nearby hospital for medical aid. 

The contractor, Ajay Tyagi, who is another accused in the case, is absconding.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has expressed his sorrow on the incident and announced Rs two lakh as financial relief for the families of each man killed in the collapse. 

The chief minister also ordered Meerut's Divisional Commissioner and Additional Director General of the police zone to submit a report on the incident.

However, the family members of the deceased have been protesting at Delhi-Meerut highway demanding Rs 10 lakh from the government for the family of the injured and  Rs 15 lakh for that of the deceased and a government job assurance.

Meanwhile, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati has asked for a proper inquiry in the incident and shared on Twitter that victims should get justice and the government must ensure that the victim’s families are getting monetary help. "Uttar Pradesh government should investigate this incident properly, timely and ensure strict punishment to its culprits. Do not save anyone and they must also provide appropriate financial help to the victims' families, this is the demand of BSP," she said on Twitter.
