Tokyo Olympics 2020: India’s first super heavyweight boxer, Satish Kumar rolls in Quarterfinals

The first Indian boxer to be a part of super heavyweight category (91 kg+), Satish Kumar has now qualified for the 1st quarterfinal round after defeating Jamaica’s Ricardo Brown in his opening bout today. He faced a comfortable win with 4-1.

In the match, Brown had poor footwork, and the 32 year-old boxer got a cut on his forehead. For the first round of the quarterfinals, Satish is playing against Bakhodir Jalolov, who is a player from Uzbekistan. Jalolov had punched out Mahammad Abdullayev and won the match by 5-0.

Satish Kumar was born to a farmer and he had a dream to join the Indian army just like his father and brothers and his mission as a teenager was to serve the country. He had joined the army as a Sepoy in 2008 and shifted to Ranikhet. His extraordinary height was the reason him being noticed during a boxing championship and was urged to give a shot.

As a matter of astonishment, he didn’t even know what boxing was all about; he used to think that WWE was boxing citing that he had heard about John Cena and the Undertaker. Since 1996, he is the first to qualify in the Olympics super heavyweight category. He has also won a silver medal in 2018 Commonwealth Games. 

Satish has also been awarded the Arjuna Award in 2018 by the Indian Government.

Talking of Brown, he is 31 years old and is the co-founder of ‘Sensi Juice’, which is basically an organic juice Canadian-based company. The juices made under his company contain Cannabis. Brown has also worked as a chef till 2014 in Jamaica.
