8) Diversification of Sports

 

When it comes to sports India is known for cricket. There is a popular saying that Cricket is a religion in India and people only prefer to watch the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, and others. However, India in 2023 witnessed a historic rise in other sports as well. In the year 2023 India achieved its best-ever Asian Games Medal Tally. This diversified India's sports culture. Apart from the Asian Games 2023, India's Chess Prodigy  Praggnanandhaa almost defeated World Champion Magnus Carlsen and became the chess world champion. India's Para Athletes were also not behind when it came to bringing pride to country India. They won 111 medals at the Para Asian Games. Sheetal Devi became the first para-Indian woman to win two gold medals in a single event. She used her legs in the Archery. 

 

7) India's Oscar Win

 

The year 2023 brought global glory to the Indian film fraternity. India's The Elephant Whisperers won the Oscar for Best Documentary Shortfilm. The 41-minute short documentary, which was produced by Achin Jain and Guneet Monga and was directed by Kartiki Gonsalves, centers on a Tamil Nadu family who adopts two orphaned baby elephants from the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve. 

 

Not only this, but RRR's Naatu Naatu song also won Oscars for Best Original Song. Indian artists even performed the song Naatu Naatu at the Academy. 

 

6) Electrfication of India

The year 2023 started with a massive breakthrough after 5.9 million tonnes of lithium deposits were discovered in Jammu and Kashmir. Lithium is a non-ferrous metal and is one of the key components in EV batteries. As per reports, if India can harness the power of Lithium then the reserve found in Kashmir can cater to India's 80 percent Lithium demands. The discovery of lithium can help India cut down imports of Petroleum and even EV products from its nemesis China. 

 

5) India treated the world as a family

 

Despite Turkey raking in the Kashmir issue against India's interest at the global forums, it was New Delhi who sent a team of Indian Army & NDRC along with relief measures to help them during the earthquake. India launched Operation Dost and the Indian Army along with NDRF not only set up temporary hospitals but also rescued hundreds and thousands of Turkish people. Apart from Turkey, India also sent relief aid to Gaza. Despite being an ally of Israel, India did not hold back from sending relief aid to the war-ridden Gaza. 

 

4) Defence

 

The Make In India project finally started to bear fruits after India transformed from defence importer to an exporter in the year 2023. The Ministry of Defence marked a historic year in 2023, witnessing a surge in defence exports, reaching an unprecedented Rs 16,000 crore in the financial year—almost Rs 3,000 crore more than the preceding year. Concurrently, defence production crossed the monumental milestone of Rs 1 lakh crore for the first time. Foreign countries expressed their interest in buying LCA-Tejas, light combat helicopters, aircraft carriers, and more. Although India is on its way to Aatmnirbhar Bharat but it is still the biggest arms importer. 

 

3) UNLF signs peace deal

While the entire world was agitated by the ethnic violence in Manipur, good news indeed came up from the region. The United National Liberation Front (UNLF), which was banned by the Ministry of Home Affairs 'agreed to renounce violence', Union Home Minister Amit Shah said in a statement. The minister said 'a historic milestone (was) achieved' as the organisation signed a peace agreement in Delhi. 

 

2) India, a Economic brighspot

India became a economic brightspot after COVID lockdown opened. At the time when the world's GDP showcase slow growth, IMF predicted that India will grow at the fastest rate. IMF's World Economic Outlook database for October 2023 contained GDP projections of various countries up to 2028. India is already the third largest economy in terms of purchasing power parity and the fifth largest in current US dollars. But, as the accompanying Chart1 shows, it won’t be long before it becomes the third largest in USD terms. The IMF forecasted that India’s GDP will be USD 4.95 trillion in 2026, overtaking Japan’s USD 4.71 trillion. 

 

India's economic success is the result of massive UPI transactions. In 2023, India reached Rs 17 lakh crore transaction surpassed via UPI. As per forecasted report, if this transactions continue then by 2026 India will reach 1 billion perday transaction. 

 

1) Chandrayaan 3

On 23 August, massive celebrations broke out across the country when Chandrayaan-3 touched down in the lunar south pole region - an area on the Moon's surface that no-one had reached before. With this, India also joined an elite club of countries to achieve a soft landing on the Moon, after the US, the former Soviet Union and China. India's Chandrayaan 3 mission was hailed by the world including NASA.
