Traditional media websites under the ambit of new IT Rules 2021; What changes?

The websites must provide the information related to their operations.

Information Technology (Guidelines for Intermediaries and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021 is notified by the union government on February 25. It will also look after the websites of traditional news media under Section 69(A) of the IT act.

The websites must provide the information related to their operations. The email address of the contact person, shall also be provided to the Information and Broadcasting ministry.

The format in which the information has to be provided voluntarily, will be provided by the government.

The government can now take action against posts and content of the websites that may pose a threat to public order. The action will also be taken if it threatens the interests of the sovereignty and integrity of India, defence and security among others.

New rules for Over The Top (OTT) platforms, social media intermediaries and digital news media publishers have been termed as "subordinate legislation."
