The true story behind ‘Trainwreck: The Real Project X’

Back in 2012, a teenage girl from a small Netherlands town, Haren, organised a Facebook event for her sixteenth birthday, and instead of setting it to private, she accidentally set it to public. In no time, the birthday invitation goes viral, and strangers start sharing it, rebranding it as ‘Project X Haren’, which is a 2012 teen comedy movie where a house party spirals into chaos. This is where the chaos begins. Thinking that it would be a fun event, thousands of teenagers across the Netherlands, who came across the Facebook invitation for the birthday party, decided to show up in Haren, expecting to have a great time at the party.

Although there were a lot of talks, since the invitation went viral, the Netherlands government didn’t lay out a clear plan, and no arrangements were made for the venue of the party or to entertain the teenagers because of which the mood of the teenagers shifted from happy to angry, creating a full-blown riot, eventually turning the town into the hotspot of unrest. In the end, what started as a sweet sixteenth birthday party turned into wild chaos, leading to police intervention and arrests.

This episode of the documentary was scheduled to be released on July 8, 2025, Tuesday on Netflix. Continue reading to find out the releasing dates of the upcoming three docuseries.
