UK approves Pfizer, BioNtech for early use, becomes first country in the world

The UK has already ordered 40m doses - enough to vaccinate 20m people, with two shots each.

United Kingdom (UK) has become first country in the world to approve Pfizer, BioNtech Covid-19 vaccine for the use and said that it will be rolled out from early next week. By doing so country has become the first in world by approving its widespread use.

"The Government has today accepted the recommendation from the independent Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) to approve Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine for use," the government said.

“The vaccine will be made available across the UK from next week”, the statement said. 

Britain's vaccine committee will select which priority groups will get the immunization first such as care home residents, health and care staff, the elderly and people who are clinically extremely vulnerable.

The UK has already ordered 40m doses - enough to vaccinate 20m people, with two shots each.

Both US-based Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech, and US biotech firm Moderna, have reported initial findings of more than 90% effectiveness.

Although vaccination can start, people still need to remain vigilant and follow coronavirus rules to stop the spread, say experts.
