
Moving forward the plan of permitting onion exports, thegovernment has gone ahead and has eased restrictions on export of specified varietiesof the produce.
In a tweet, Minister for Railways and Commerce and IndustryPiyush Goyal said: "Empowering farmers and increasing their income, thegovernment permits export of Bangalore Rose and Krishnapuram onions of up to10,000 MT each."
As per the update, 'Bangalore Rose' and 'Krishnapuram' varietiesup to 10,000 MT each can now be exported, subject to certain conditions.
"The export shipment of 'Bangalore Rose' onions shallbe allowed only through the Chennai port and export to be completed by March31, 2021," the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said in anotification.
"An exporter shall have to get a certificate from theHorticulture Commissioner, government of Karnataka, certifying the item and thequantity of 'Bangalore Rose' onions to be exported.
On 'Krishnapuram' variety, the DGFT mandated that exportersneed to get certificates from the Assistant Director, Horticulture, Kadapa,government of Andhra Pradesh, certifying the quantity of onions for exportpurposes.
"The Customs Authorities at the Chennai port will allowexport of 'Krishnapuram' onions on the basis of certificate from AssistantDirector, Horticulture, Kadapa, and registration certificate from the office ofAdditional DGFT, Chennai, submitted by the exporter."
Earlier, the export of onion was completely banned as ameasure to control the rising domestic prices.
In the revised policy issued in September, export of allvarieties, including 'Bangalore Rose' and 'Krishnapuram' onions, excluding cut,sliced or broken in powder form, were prohibited.
