In a bizarre development, an uproar was sparked at Armaan Hospital situated in Jalandhar's Football Chowk. The uproar broke out after a woman tragically lost her life during a minor spine surgery at Armaan Hospital. The incident has sparked major controversy, with the victim’s family accusing the hospital staff and attending doctor of gross negligence and even misconduct during the procedure.
According to the family, the patient identified as Sonam Multani, a resident of Navanshala village in Gurdaspur district, was suffering from a spinal condition. She was admitted to Armaan Hospital on June 24 and underwent a minor spinal surgery performed by Dr. RPS Chhabra in the afternoon.
As per the family, Dr. Chhabra assured them that it was a “routine procedure,” but shortly after being taken into the operating theatre around 4 PM, Sonam began to experience internal bleeding in the abdominal region. Within minutes, doctors informed the family that an emergency surgery would be required.
However, just 6–7 minutes after the procedure, Sonam was declared unconscious and later died. Her father, Karanjit Singh, alleged that it was due to a botched surgery and medical mishandling.
According to the family, the surgery lasted for over 5.5 hours, far longer than expected, and they were not updated about the patient’s condition during the procedure. Komal had reportedly walked into the hospital on her own for the operation.
What did Armaan Hospital's Doctor say?
Dr. RPS Chhabra, interacting with the media, issued a detailed clarification regarding the medical circumstances that led to the fatal outcome. “The patient was undergoing a procedure for a disc-related spinal issue. The operation itself was carried out successfully without any complications during the surgery,” the doctor said.
He further explained that the patient’s condition began to deteriorate after the operation was completed. “Following the procedure, the patient experienced a sudden drop in blood pressure. We immediately conducted an ultrasound and discovered complications in the abdominal region. Despite our best efforts to stabilize her vitals, we were unable to bring her blood pressure back to normal,” he added.
According to the doctor, the patient was placed on a ventilator and monitored throughout the night. “We did everything we could from our side. The patient remained alive till the morning. In fact, 3 to 4 doctors from the patient’s own family came and examined her condition overnight,” he said.
Addressing concerns about the cause of the unexpected complication, the doctor emphasized that this was a rare medical scenario. “The surgery was performed correctly, but sometimes, such complications arise due to underlying issues that even the most experienced doctors cannot anticipate. In extremely rare cases, perhaps 1 in 1000, a blood vessel can be abnormally adhered to surrounding tissue. This kind of vascular adhesion can lead to an internal injury that is nearly impossible to detect beforehand,” he explained.
