Amidst an ongoing probe into the disastrous Morbi bridge collapse, a police constable named Vijay Pratapbhai Chawada is being praised for his valour on social media. Morbi Police constable Vijay Pratapbhai Chawada reportedly dived into the river to save the lives of the people who fell down after the Morbi bridge collapse in Gujarat. Morbi constable Vijay Pratapbhai Chawada video is doing rounds on social media with netizens are hailing him for his courage and for saving the lives of at least a dozen people from the deadly bridge collapse incident.

In the Morbi constable viral video, Vijay Pratapbhai can be seen in his Police uniform inside the river and helping out people to come to the shore. Furthermore, Vijay Pratapbhai can be seen rescuing a woman with the help of a rope. As per reports, the police constable jumped into the water after the Morbi bridge collapse without even thinking about his own life. The constable reportedly knew swimming and as a result he did not think twice before jumping into the water.

Know the reason behind Gujarat's Morbi bridge collapse

On Sunday, at least 132 (during writing this) people were declared dead after a British-era bridge in Gujarat's Morbi collapsed. Some 177 people were also saved and teams are searching for several others who are still missing. Notably, the bridge which was shut for extensive repairs and renovation was reopened to the public on the Gujarati New Year day on October 26. As per eyewitnesses, the bridge was crammed with people including women and children when it snapped, plunging them into the water below. The state government formed a 5-member committee comprising top officials to investigate the tragedy.

Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi stated that a criminal case has been registered and a five-member high-powered committee is probing the bridge collapse. "A case has been registered under charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and intentional act causing death against whoever is found responsible," he said.

Furthermore, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh for the kin of the deceased and a compensation of Rs 50,000 for those injured. Gujarat government also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh for kin of those who lost their lives and a compensation of Rs 50,00 for those injured in the Morbi bridge collapse.

Notably, the bridge with a capacity of 150 was allowed to accommodate over 400 people leading to overcrowding. As of now, nine people linked to the Ajanta Oreva Group have been arrested by the Gujarat Police in connection with the Morbi bridge collapse tragedy. PM Modi visited Morbi and chaired multiple meetings to review the situation. He reiterated that the "need of the hour" is to conduct a detailed and extensive inquiry that will identify all aspects relating to this tragedy.
