Shocking development has come to the fore from Barnala district in which a district administration team that had come to extinguish fire was held hostage for 5 hours to restrict them from extinguishing the fire set by farmer. The fire extinguisher vehicle that was called by the team was also taken under hold by the protesting farmers.
One of the major problems that Punjab is facing is its deteriorating air quality and the only reason for the same is ever-increasing cases of stubble burning. This year the reported cases of farm fires have crossed the record of previous year which is fearsome. The administration is trying its level best to find a solution to this problem. In one of the recent incidents, farmers of Kalala village became obstacle for the team who had come to stop stubble burning.
Reportedly, the incident is of Barnala, where in evening, farmer named Ranjodh Singh set straw of his field on fire. On receiving information about the same, Agriculture officer Charan Ram, Tarsem Singh and Jaswinder Singh reached the spot with his team to douse the fire.
During this, farmers present at the scene surrounded the team that has come to extinguish fire and took possession of the vehicle as well. The team was kept hostage for 5 hours and only after being assured that no step will be taken against them, farmers let the team leave.
District head of Kisan Bhartiya Union, Jagsir Singh while stating on incident said, “this year, around 18 acres of wheat crop in the area got destroyed due to burning, then the fire brigade vehicle did not reach. If any action is taken against the farmer who set the fire, he will block all the stubble lying in the fields on Moga Road, Chandigarh Road, Bathinda Road and Patiala Road.”
