The farmers' proposed tractor march didn’t go the way it was assured. At many places, farmers were seen trying to run a tractor over police personnel, while some tried to attack them with a sword. The police used tear gas shells to stop farmers entering ITO which was not in the routes permitted to them.

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday condemned disturbing incidents of violence that took place in Delhi as protesting farmers got into a rift with the Delhi police on Republic Day.

"Violence is not the solution to any problem and sought repeal of the three farm laws in the national interest," Tweeted Gandhi.  He said that if anyone gets hurt the damage will be inflicted to the country.

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, too, joined Gandhi to call out the unrest in the national capital and said that "On Republic Day, no flag but the sacred Tiranga should fly aloft the Red Fort."

On Tuesday afternoon, one of the protesting farmers climbed up one of the poles at the Red Fort and put a Nishan Sahib flag atop it.

"Most unfortunate. I have supported the farmers’ protests from the start but I cannot condone lawlessness. And on #RepublicDay no flag but the sacred tiranga should fly aloft the Red Fort (SIC), Tharoor's tweet read.

Congress leader Jaiveer Shergill showing his displeasure over the clash between the farmers and police asked protesters to "follow the dharma of democracy".

"Violence and vandalism will lead us nowhere. I urge everyone to maintain peace and honour agreements. Today is not the day for such chaos," said BJP's Delhi MP Gautam Gambhir urging the protesters to maintain peace.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot too appealed to the farmers to maintain peace. He said, "The farmers' movement has been peaceful till now. There is an appeal to the farmers to maintain peace and not to commit violence. Violence has no place in a democracy. If there is violence in this movement, it will be a success for the forces trying to make the movement unsuccessful, so keep the peace."
