Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala contributes to 70 percent of the annual production of honey in the country, Governor Justice (Retd) P Sathasivam had said.
The Governor said this after inaugurating the 11th National Bee Keepers' Meet and Honey Fest-2019, organized by the Federation of Indigenous Apiculturists (FIA) to promote the production of honey, here on Wednesday.
"Our faith in the rural economy would become stronger when we encourage every village of our country to become production centers of honey. Let's convince people that rearing honey bees in the homesteads of Kerala is neither difficult nor expensive," he added.
With over 1500 life members, FIA gives technical advice on value addition of honey, developing hive products, etc, he said adding beekeeping and production of honey are popular in Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
"Of the 115 crops grown worldwide, 87 crops depend upon insects for cross-pollination. Honey bees perform more than 80 percent of pollination," Justice Sathasivam said.
