Ganesh Chaturthi, one of the significant festivals in India is all set up to come tomorrow i.e. on 22nd August,2020. Lord Ganesh is one of the most loved and worshipped gods by Indians. According to hindu mythology , Lord Ganesha is symbol of prosperity, wisdom and good fortune. The festival of Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated with energy and postivity across the country, especially Maharasthra.

How to perform puja at home?

This year, the Ganesha Chaturthi Tithi begins at 11:02 PM on August 21, 2020, and the Chaturthi Tithi ends at 07:57 PM on August 22, 2020. Devotees must begin their day by chanting ‘Ganpati Bappa Morya‘. During the puja, they must offer him besan ladoos for peace and growth. The idol should be placed on a red-coloured cloth, and devotees must light a diya to eliminate the darkness from their life.

How to follow fast(vrat) rituals?

People observe fast from dawn to the dusk. During this time they do not eat anything. Some people also prefer to do partial fast in which they are allowed to eat Prasad offered at the puja and milk. After the evening aarti, the fast is concluded.

The devotees can opt for nirajal vrat (waterless fast) or the phalahar vrat. The devotees are allowed to have fruits, sabudana khichdi, kheer and all kinds of sweets. The followers strictly prohibit consuming non-vegetarian food and alcohol during these 10 days of Ganesh Chaturthi.

“Om Gam Ganpataye Namah”.

“Vakratunda Maha-Kaaya Surya-Kotti Samaprabha Nirvighnam Kuru Me Deva Sarva-Kaaryeshu Sarvadaa”.

“Om Namo Siddhi Vinayakaya Sarva kaarya kartrey Sarva vighna prashamnay Sarvarjaya Vashyakarnaya Sarvajan Sarvastree Purush Aakarshanaya Shreeng Om Swaha”.\

Ganpati Visarjan

Ganesh Visarjan is equally important as Ganesh Chaturthi. Visarjan ends with a ritual called 'Uttarpuja'. After which, Lord Ganesha’s statue is immersed in water and blessings are sought. Devotees chant slogans such as Ganapati Bappa Morya while taking the idols to be immersed in the sea. Ganesha Visarjan can also be performed on the 7th, 5th or 3rd day of Ganesh Chaturthi.

What to Avoid during this festival?

1. Never sleep in front of Ganpati idol. If you have no choice, then never have your feet pointing towards the idol.

2. All the money and gifts offered in Ganesha’s feet should never be kept in home. This should be donated to a temple or needy.

3. If you are immersing the idol in sea, please do not dump all the decorations along with it in the water. Do not forget about environment while worshipping the Lord.

4. Ganesha should never be placed near the washroom facilities, not even if the back of the idol is against a wall that separates the room from the washroom.

5. You need not bring Ganesha idol every year or in alternative years if you once brought it home. It is completely your wish to bring it again or not.

6. The trunk of the Lord should be turning to the left side. If the trunk is turning to the right side, it is considered inauspicious. You can safely place a Ganesha idol with trunk to left, straight or in the air.
