Texas Dairy Farm Fire Reason: What happened at South Fork Dairy?

As per initial reports, a malfunction in a piece of farm equipment may have caused an explosion that led to the fire, said County Judge Mandy Gfeller, the county's top executive. Texas fire officials are still investigating the cause, she said. Malone, the mayor, said he wasn't aware of any other fires reported at the facility. He said the dairy had opened in the area just over three years ago and employed 50 to 60 people. It is pertinent to mention here that almost 90 percent of cows have died at the farm. The aftermath of the tragic fire revealed that a staggering 18,000 cattle died, which is nearly three times the amount of cows slaughtered each day in the US. The cows that died in the fire were a mix of Holstein and Jersey cows. Approximately 90 percent of the farm’s total herd were killed in the massive explosion.

As per locals, they heard a loud boom and could see massive pillars of smoke for miles. The black smoke could be seen for miles, even from surrounding towns. “It was crazy,” Kennedy Cleraman, a Dimmitt resident, told KFDA. “There was a big, massive, black air and it looked like fog in the street. And it was all burnt- the place."

PETA took to its Twitter handle and wrote, "Over 18,000 cows were killed in an explosion at this dairy farm in Texas...THIS is the dairy industry ...This tragedy could’ve been avoided if these cows weren’t being factory farmed in the first place."
