Late Sunday night, local roadways in the nation's capital Washington, D.C. were momentarily closed near the White House. The White House access routes were closed, and the affected area was declared to be 18th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue.

The federal officers informed that "uniformed officers" located an "unknown item." The DC Fire Department's Hazmat team responded and the White House grounds were evacuated as a precaution, the Secret Service spokesman Anthony Gugliemi added. DC Fire and EMS was contacted to evaluate, USSS said.

It added that after making sure there was no new threat, it lifted the road closures and resumed regular activities at the White House.

Hazmat teams were reportedly seen entering the White House's West Wing, which houses the president's office and residence, according to an eyewitnesses. It is unknown if the president was informed of the occurrence or was present when it occurred in the building. With numerous layers of security and screening, the West Wing is one of the most secure parts of the White House. Additionally, meetings and some of the most delicate and secret information are held there.
