In a horrific development, Indian classical dancer Amarnath Ghosh on Tuesday was shot dead by unknown assailants while he was on a walk in Chicago, USA. When Amarnath Ghosh's murder did not grab the headlines, TV Actress Devoleena Bhattacharjee took to her social media handles and demanded answers from India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and the Indian Embassy in Chicago. As per reports, Amarnath Ghosh was taking an evening walk in the St Louis Academy neighbourhood on Tuesday, 27th February, when he was shot multiple times. Who was Amarnath Ghosh?
As per reports, Amarnath Ghosh hailed from West Bengal’s Birbhum. He was a well-trained Kuchipudi and Bharatnatyam dancer. Amarnath Ghosh was reportedly pursuing an MFA in Dance at the Washington University in Saint Louis. He had done his Diploma in Bharatnatyam from the Kalakshetra College of Fine Arts in Chennai. He was recipient of Nritya Kanak Mani Saman awards from the International Dance and Music Festival New Delhi. As per Devoleena, Amarnath Ghosh's parents passed away and therefore no one was left to raise voice for the classical dancer.
Reacting to Amarnath Ghosh's murder, Indian Embassy in Chicago wrote, "Deep condolences to family & friends of deceased Amarnath Ghosh in StLouis, Missouri. We are following up forensic, investigation with police & providing support."
The Embassy further added, "Consulate is extending all help to relatives of deceased Amarnath Ghosh. Taken up the case strongly with St Louis police and the University for investigation of the reprehensible gun attack."
Devoleena Bhattacharjee on her X wrote, "My friend #Amarnathghosh was shot & killed in St louis academy neigbourhood, US on tuesday evening. Only child in the family, mother died 3 years back. Father passed away during his childhood. Well the reason , accused details everything are not revealed yet or perhaps no one left in his family to fight for it except his few friends. He was from kolkata. Excellent dancer , was pursuing PHD , was taking an evening walk and suddenly he was shot multiple times by an unknown. Some friends in US are trying to claim the body but still no update about it. @IndianEmbassyUS kindly see to it if you could. Atleast we should know the reason of his murder. @DrSJaishankar @narendramodi."
Thereafter, she wrote, "Hope we get the update of this heinous crime as early as possible. If i am not wrong this is 5th or 6th murder of Indian Students in 2 months. We all are worried here & griefing."
