Mani was an avid and enthusiastic reader all her life and was also known as the ‘Weather Woman of India’, she grew up in Travancore which is present-day Kerala.

Upon completion of her intermediate in Science course from Women’s Christian College, she traveled to Madras to complete her Bachelor's degree from the Presidency College with honors in Physics and Chemistry.

Her dedication and outstanding performance in academics earned her a scholarship for post-graduate studies at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. Mani also got the opportunity of working under Nobel Laureate Sir C.V. Raman.

Mani published five papers, completed her Ph.D. dissertation between 1942 and 1945, and also began a graduate program at Imperial College, London, where she learned to specialize in meteorological instrumentation.

In 1953, she was elevated to the position of the head of the division and gave India more than 100 weather-related instrument designs.

Throughout the 50s, Mani established a network of solar radiation monitoring stations and published several papers on sustainable energy measurement.

Eventually, she held the position of Deputy Director General of the India Meteorological Department and is also credited for being in key positions at the UN-based World Meteorological Organization.
