OpenAI on Friday sent shockwaves around the world after it announced that the company's Board of Directors has fired Sam Altman. Sam Altman was the CEO of the Microsoft-backed company OpenAI. OpenAI is the company that created ChatGPT and Sam Altman was at the top post. After losing confidence in Altman, OpenAI in its official release announced that Mira Murati will be serving as the new Interim CEO of OpenAI. Who is Mira Murati?

 

OpenAI informed that  Mira Murati is the company’s chief technology officer. However, she will now serve as interim CEO, effective immediately. Praising Mira for her work ethic, OpenAI wrote, "A member of OpenAI’s leadership team for five years, Mira has played a critical role in OpenAI’s evolution into a global AI leader. She brings a unique skill set, and understanding of the company’s values, operations, and business, and already leads the company’s research, product, and safety functions.

 

 

Given her long tenure and close engagement with all aspects of the company, including her experience in AI governance and policy, the board believes she is uniquely qualified for the role and anticipates a seamless transition while it conducts a formal search for a permanent CEO."

 

 

All About Mira Murati

 

As per reports, Mira Murati was born and raised in Albania to Albanian parents. When Mira was only 16, she moved to Canada to attend Pearson College UWC.

 

Following that, Mira went on to study mechanical engineering at the Ivy League Dartmouth College in the US. During her days as an undergraduate, she reportedly built a hybrid race car for her senior project. 

 

Murati started her work life as an intern at Goldman Sachs and then at Zodiac Aerospace. After that, she spent three years at Tesla working on Model X. Reportedly, Murati joined sensor-building startup Leap Motion in 2016 as VP of product and engineering. She left Leap Motion after two years to join OpenAI as VP of applied AI and partnerships.

 

After joining OpenAI, she started working on supercomputing when she joined the organization in 2018. In 2022, she was promoted to chief technology officer.
