In the crackdown against Waris Punjab De Chief Amritpal Singh, till now 122 of his associates and supporters have been arrested. Out of these, 7 people including Amritpal Singh’s uncle Harjit Singh has been sent to Assam’s Dibrugarh. The action against Amritpal Singh was started by Punjab Police around 23 days after Ajnala violent clash. During the search operation, internet services were scrapped in Punjab in order to restrict rumours spreading. Reportedly, Amritpal Singh’s car was chased by 100 police cars and on the very first day, 6 of his associates were also arrested from Shahkot, Jalandhar.

Earlier, the Punjab government also cancelled arms licenses of 9 associates of Amritpal Singh. All these steps are being taken against Waris Punjab De Chief after the Ajnala Police Station clash. The closest associates of Amritpal Singh are currently in Assam’s Dibrugarh namely Daljit Singh Kalsi, Bhagwant Singh, Gurmeet Singh, 'Pradhanmantri' Bajeka and Harjit Singh and 2 others. Now, the question rises that why Amritpal Singh’s close associates are being sent to Assam’s Dibrugarh.

The facts and sources have cited mainly 4 suspected reasons for Assam being the ideal location to send Amritpal Singh’s close associates.

The first reason was the meeting held on 2nd March 2023 between Amit Shah, Bhagwant Mann and Acting DGP Gaurav Yadav. In that very meeting crackdown against Amritpal Singh was planned. During the meeting it was decided that if he or any of his close associates are arrested then they will be sent to Assam’s Dibrugarh.

Second is the DGP of Assam. IPS GP Singh took charge as Assam DGP on January 31, 2023. He is known as the master of handling terrorist activities. Adding to this, he has great experience in taking care of situations involving terrorists, ISI and other organizations that disturb the harmony of country. He is a 1991-batch IPS officer of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre and has worked with the National investigating for six years. Also, he has worked in an investigative agency in several parts of the northeast, including Assam, for over 18 years. GP Singh worked on several militancy-related cases in Jammu and Kashmir, the Northeastern region, and Punjab. Also, he is close to Punjab acting DGP Gaurav Yadav as he is IPS officer of 1992 batch. The officials allegedly thought it would be the best decision to send Amritpal Singh’s close associates to Assam.

Third reason is that after Himant Biswa became the CM of Assam, ISI links and threat in the state decreased. Reportedly, now it is the best state in India that has the least terrorism threat and activities. Sending Amritpal Singh’s close associates to Assam will break all ties of ISI with them. ISI will neither be able to save nor contact them by chance.

The last reason is that sending Amritpal Singh’s close associates to Assam will exert psychological pressure on them as they will be living in isolation. This will somewhere force them to reveal certain information that might act beneficial to Punjab Police.
