Singapore's political fraternity was shocked after two major lawmakers of the country Cheng Li Hui and Tan Chuan-Jin admitted their 'inappropriate relationship' and resigned from their post. As per reports, Speaker of Parliament Tan Chuan-Jin and fellow People’s Action Party (PAP) MP Cheng Li Hui admitted to being in a relationship despite the fact they were counseled by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in February. Notably, the official reason of Speaker of Singapore's Parliament, Tan Chuan-Jin resignation is using unparliamentary language against an opposition lawmaker during sittings in April this year. As per local media reports, on April 17 during a Parliamentary debate, Tan muttered "f****** populist" after he called for Indian-origin MP Vikram Nair from the ruling PAP to speak, following a speech by MP Jamus Lim of the opposition Workers' Party. Now, the question arises why Cheng Li Hui resigned or what is Cheng Li Hui's resignation reason? To know the answer continue reading-

On Monday, Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in a press conference said, "Besides Mr Tan’s recent unparliamentary language used, there is also the issue of his inappropriate relationship with fellow PAP MP Ms Cheng Li Hui. This is, in comparison, the more serious matter because he was the Speaker and she an MP, and there should not have not been a relationship." PM Lee Hsien Loong in his statement further informed the media stated that it was “necessary” for Tan to quit in order to 'maintain the high standards of propriety and personal conduct which the PAP has upheld all these years'.

For the unversed, it is among the rare incident in the history of Singapore's history where sudden resignations of senior PAP party members have been witnessed. PAP, the ruling party has been in power since 1959, before the city-state’s independence in 1965. The PM further outlined, “It saddens me to discover that these two PAP MPs have fallen short of the high standards of propriety and personal conduct that we expect of all PAP MPs," adding that “When such a situation arises, it is my duty as secretary-general of the party to deal with them and put things right. This means to counsel, to correct, to admonish and ultimately, if necessary, to remove the MP from the party and Parliament.”
