China's alarming spike in COVID-19 cases after it eased its restrictions abandoning its zero-COVID policy. Notably, China eased its Zero COVID Policy after the Xi Jinping administration faced massive protests from the Chinese people for their inhumane treatment. According to projections by a group of professors at the University of Hong Kong, up to 684 people could die due to the virus one million. Therefore, with China’s total population of 1.4 billion, 964,400 deaths could occur across the nation reported a US media report. Now, at a time when China is going through an alarming COVID surge, the Chinese people are busy hoarding lemons.

Yes! you heard it right. Bloomberg reported that lemon farmers have informed of a sudden boom in their sales, as people are rushing to buy lemons as a home remedy for Covid cure. A Chinese farmer named Wen was quoted by the news agency saying that the market is on fire. Wen grows lemons on about 130 acres (53 hectares) in Anyue, a county in the southwestern province of Sichuan that produces around 70% of the fruit in China. He said his sales have skyrocketed to 20 to 30 tons a day over the past week, from just 5 or 6 tons previously.

Why Chinese are hoarding lemons?

As per reports, the surge in demand for Wen’s lemons is coming from cities like Beijing and Shanghai, where people are rushing to buy foods rich in vitamin C to boost their immunity in the latest battle against the pandemic. The Chinese people are in fear that if cold and flu medicines run short, having lemon-rich or let's say Vitamin C-rich foods will help their immunity. The hoarding of lemons also hints how the Xi Jinping government was unprepared to handle the COVID surge and therefore the public is being forced to contend with the government’s abrupt shift away from the Covid Zero policies. It is pertinent to mention here that there’s insufficient evidence that vitamin C can treat or prevent Covid.
