The countdown for the much-awaited docuseries of the month has begun as The Indrani Mukerjea Story: Buried Truth will be available for streaming on February 23, 2024, on Netflix. Directed by Uraaz Bahl and Shaana Levy, Netflix's four-episode docuseries examines the complexities of the highly-debated Sheena Bora case, and prime suspect Indrani Mukerjea is in the center of it. In the trailer, the makers have vaguely showcased the life of Indrani Mukerjea and how she was accused of the gruesome murder of Sheena Bora. For the unversed, the Sheena Bora murder case came to light in 2012 and it became a nationwide talking point due to the complexities and alleged involvement of media tycoon Indrani Mukerjea. What was Sheena Bora's murder case?
Sheena Bora, 24, was an executive working for Mumbai Metro One based in Mumbai. Sheena went missing on 24 April 2012. In August 2015, Mumbai Police arrested her mother Indrani Mukerjea, her stepfather Peter Mukerjea, and her mother's driver, Shyamvar Pinturam Rai, for allegedly abducting and killing her and subsequently burning her corpse.
As per reports, Sheena Bora was allegedly strangled to death inside a car, purportedly by her own mother Indrani Mukerjea, along with her then-driver Shyamvar Rai and former husband Sanjeev Khanna. Bora, the daughter of Indrani from a previous relationship, met a gruesome fate, with her charred remains discovered in a forest within the Raigad district.
Notably, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has approached a Mumbai court to halt the release the Netflix's documentary.
Who killed Sheena Bora or Sheena Bora's murder motive?
CBI in its chargesheet named Indrani Mukerjea and her driver Shyamvar Rai. The 2016 CBI Chargesheet later included Peter Mukerjea as well. According to the CBI, Peter and Indrani Indrani Mukerjea were equal participants in the conspiracy hatched to murder Sheena Bora as both were against her relationship with Rahul.
Reports suggest that Shyamvar Rai, the driver, confessed to his involvement following his arrest in an unrelated matter. Subsequently, Indrani Mukerjea was apprehended in August 2015, though she secured bail in May 2022. Currently, Indrani is out of bail.
Sheena Bora's cause of murder
As per the CBI and multiple reports, Sheena Bora was in a live-in relationship with her step-brother Rahul. Rahul was the younger son of Peter Mukerjea with his first wife Shabnam Singh. According to the CBI, Peter, Indrani, and Sanjeev allegedly entered into a criminal conspiracy to kill Sheena in April 2012. Financial disputes as well as Indrani's opposition to Sheena's relationship with Rahul were key motives for the killing. The motive came to light in 2015, when Shyamwar (driver), who had helped dispose of the body, was arrested in another case. Rai later turned an approver in the Sheena Bora case. Thereafter, Indrani was arrested in August that year.
