With 16,432 fresh cases, India records lowest daily Covid-19 cases since June 24

According to the Union Health Ministry data, with 16,432 fresh cases, India saw its lowest daily rise in Coronavirus infections on Tuesday. The overall infection count since the outbreak in January has reached 1,02,24,303. 

This is the lowest spike in daily cases since June 24, when 15, 968 cases were recorded. The daily new covid-19 infections fell below 20,000 for the third time this month, while overall death cases stood at 1,48,153, with 252 deaths being reported. 

The number of recoveries has increased to 98,07,569 pushing the national recovery rate to 95.92 per cent. The covid-19 case fatality rate stands at 1.45 per cent, and the active caseload has remained below 3 lakh for the eighth consecutive day. 

The country’s active coronavirus cases stand at 2,68,581 which comprises 2.63 per cent of the total caseload, the health ministry data stated.

- Around 50 million dosages of the Oxford-AstraZeneca Coronavirus vaccine ''Covishield'' has already been manufactured by Serum Institute of India. The firm is planning to scale up the production to 100 million by March next year even as it awaits approval for emergency use authorisation, a top company official said on Monday.

- Serum Institute of India's Adar Poonawalla said the majority of the first 50 million doses will go to India. "At least for the first month, most of our doses will go to India," he said.

- The government has formed a genome surveillance consortium called INSACOG, under the leadership of the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), for laboratory and epidemiological surveillance of circulating strains of the coronavirus in the country. The body was made keeping the view of a new, more fast-spreading strain of the COVID-19 virus being detected in the UK.

- Covid-19 has had a disastrous effect on people and economies around the globe. The World Health Organization on Monday cautioned that worse pandemics could occur in future urging the world to get "serious" and be prepared. "This is a wakeup call," WHO emergencies chief Michael Ryan said.
