What began as a music festival (Fête de la Musique) in 1982 in France has evolved into World Music Day, which is celebrated every year on June 21. This day honours both aspiring and seasoned musicians, emphasising the concept of equal opportunity in the field of music. Every musician is encouraged to share his or her achievements with the rest of the world on this day.

In 1982, Jack Lang, France's cultural minister, and Maurice Fleuret, a French composer, came up with the idea of commemorating World Music Day. It all started on the summer solstice in Paris. In more than 120 countries, World Music Day is commemorated with free concerts held in public spaces such as streets, stations, museums, and parks. On this day, musicians enjoy performing at public. Starting from 1982, the summer solstice day of June 21 came to be observed as the World Music Day.
