The International Association of Art, a UNESCO member, welcomed the day as World Art Day to raise awareness of artistic activity around the world.

The first commemoration took place on April 15, 2012, which also happened to be the birth anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci, an Italian polymath. In 2015, the day was officially commemorated in Los Angeles, USA and in 2017, the International Association of Art formed its official US chapter.

According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), commemorating World Art Day strengthens the link between society and artistic expressions while also highlighting the important role of artists in ensuring long-term growth. In addition, the event supports the arts in educational institutions.

Throughout the day, a variety of cultural festivals, conferences, exhibits, and seminars are held around the world. The festivities will be shortened this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
