World Blood Donor day is globally celebrated on June 14 every year. This day highlights the importance of blood and blood products to save a life, and also appreciates the blood donors for their life-saving gift. World Blood Donor day is a part of a campaign of the World Health Organization and the objective of this day is to raise awareness about the need for safe blood and blood products. 

THEME of the World Blood Donor Day 2021: 

This year, the theme of World Blood Donor Day is – “Give Blood and Keep the World Beating”. This theme highlights the importance of blood donation to save people’s lives all around the world. This message is important during the crucial time of Covid-19 as it has caused huge loss to the lives of people all around the world.

HISTORY of the World Blood Donor Day:

The first time the World Blood Donor Day was celebrated on June 14, 2005, by the World Health Organization in the collaboration with Red Cross. Since then, the day is adopted by many countries and is used to spread awareness about the life-saving importance of donating blood. The ultimate goal is to fill all the blood stocks, globally, from the voluntary unpaid donors. 

The day is specifically celebrated on June 14, because on this day, Nobel Prize winner Karl Landsteiner was born. He was behind the discovery of ABO blood groups.
SIGNIFICANCE of the World Blood Donor Day:

The day focuses on creating awareness about the need for volunteers for the donation of blood. Especially, during this crucial time of Covid-19, where people can do their part by donating blood at their nearby blood donation camp, if they are fit to do so. India is one of the countries which experiences a shortage of blood, as per the reports by experts, India suffers from a shortage of 40 million units of blood annually. 

People die because of the lack of blood, to save their lives blood donation must be encouraged.

INTERESTING FACT about blood donation:

  • An average human body consists of 10 units i.e. five to six liters of blood and while donating only one unit of blood is taken from the donor’s body.
  • A person between the age of 18-60 can donate the blood. 
  • Men can donate blood after the interval of three months and women can donate blood after four months.
  • The “O-negative” blood group is known as the universal donor, as it can be given to a person with any blood group. 
  • If the patient’s blood group is unknown during an emergency, then the O-negative blood group can be given to him/ her.
  • Only 7 percent of the population of India have an O-negative blood group. 
  • As per the experts, if you ever witness dizziness, sweating, weight loss, or any other problem after blood donation, then you should not donate blood.
