
Determined to bring back glory days of Asia's firstGovernment Arts and Sports College in Punjab, Deputy Commissioner GhanshyamThori said that the district administration would make all efforts on a warfooting to restore the prestige of the college in the upcoming months.
Conducting an extensive inspection of the college, DeputyCommissioner along with a battery of officials visited Swimming Pool, Athletictrack, Gymnastic, boxing and Multipurpose Indoor Hall, said that no stone wouldbe left unturned for ensuring complete makeover of the facilities includingsports infrastructure, grounds and equipment here which will encourage buddingplayers from across the state to join this prestigious institute.
Ghanshyam Thori said that he is well-aware about thehistory of college which has remained a nursery of international sportspersonsand produced hundreds of players of national and international repute since itsinception in 1961.
The officials of Sports and PWD department informed DeputyCommissioner that works of college’s main building, hostel block, internalroads, new pavilion block, gymnasium hall have already been completed but someprogress is pending in the completion of Multipurpose Indoor Hall andplayground following which Deputy Commissioner rang up higher officials andsought immediate release of around Rs 3.94 crore.
Further, Deputy Commissioner also informed that there is anurgent need of new football ground as the earlier filed was lying completelydefunct, installing street lights, RO water coolers and manpower includinghostel warden, security workers and sanitation workers in the college.
Deputy Commissioner immediately directed authorities of thecollege to send a detailed proposal to him about the other facilities theyneeded so that he can take up the matter with higher officials and funds forthe revamping of infrastructure and facilities for the youths here can bereceived at the earliest.
Meanwhile, Ghanshyam Thori also took stock of the buildingwork of Baba Sahib Bhim Rao Ambedkar Government College, Boota Mandi and saidthat 55 per cent construction of college has been over. He said that the PunjabGovernment has been spending Rs 11.46 crore on this degree college.
Deputy Commissioner also talked with higher officials ofHigher Education Department and requested for the release of the remainingamount of Rs 9.21 crore for completing the construction of the college. He saidthat college will ensure quality education to the students of society mostlyfrom weaker sections.
