A major traffic disruption was reported on the Jalandhar highway near the Chogitti Flyover after a tipper truck loaded with gravel overturned, allegedly while attempting to avoid a car that was stationary on the road. The accident left the tipper driver seriously injured and caused a massive traffic jam stretching nearly four kilometres.
Inputs from preliminary investigation
According to preliminary information, the incident occurred after a car was reportedly parked on the highway. While trying to avoid colliding with the vehicle, the tipper driver lost control, struck a roadside pole, and the truck overturned onto the road. The impact scattered gravel across the highway, blocking traffic in the area.
The injured driver was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. The accident led to severe congestion, forcing many commuters to take alternate routes.
Traffic police initiatives
The accident triggered a massive traffic jam extending nearly four kilometres, with long queues of vehicles forming on both sides of the highway. Many commuters were forced to take alternate routes to avoid the congestion, while several others remained stranded for a considerable period.
Upon receiving information about the incident, traffic police reached the spot and began efforts to restore normal traffic flow. With the help of a crane, officials worked to remove the overturned tipper and clear the road.
Traffic Police Sub-Inspector Raj Kumar said the tipper carrying gravel overturned on the flyover between Chogitti and PAP, resulting in a major traffic jam. He added that police teams were working with cranes to upright the vehicle and reopen the highway to traffic as quickly as possible.
Statements from eyewitness
Eyewitness Sahil said the accident occurred because a Himachal Pradesh-registered car involved in an earlier mishap was standing on the road. He claimed the occupants were asked to move the vehicle to the side, but they failed to do so. As the tipper driver attempted to avoid the stationary car, he lost control, hit a pole, and overturned.
Sahil further alleged that the occupants of the car fled the scene after the accident. He said the car's registration number had been noted and that four people were travelling in the vehicle at the time of the incident.
Police are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident and determine the exact sequence of events.
