Slowly and steadily Punjab is returning towards normalcy. Punjab witnessed record breaking floods this year and the Government has now started to compensate victims affected by floods.

As per reports, monsoon is now on its way back from Punjab and is likely to end completely by September 20. Thereafter, India is all set to welcome winters.

Now, it has been predicted that while Punjab is still recovering from floods, the state is likely to witness freezing winters that will be chillier than normal.

TOI quoted US Climate Prediction Center that predicted that there is a 71% likelihood of La Niña forming between October and December 2025. The chances ease to around 54% during December to February 2026, but a formal watch remains active.

The report also mentioned about the India Meteorological Department (IMD). IMD has reportedly noted that conditions remain neutral at present, but its climate models, along with international forecasts, indicate a stronger chance of La Niña setting in after the monsoon.

How the winters will be in Punjab this year?

As per reports, a mild winter will start from the first week of October 2025. Mild cold will be felt between Dussehra and Diwali, but after the festivals, as the temperature drops, the cold will become even more intense. The months of December and January will be at its peak. During this time the minimum temperature is expected to reach 4 to 6 degrees Celsius.

La Niña's deep impact is expected to be seen in many states of North India—Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan. Due to cold wave, it may be difficult for people to get out of the house.

Talking about La Nina, a 2024 study by IISER Mohali and Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research found that La Niña often intensifies cold waves in north India by channeling icy winds from higher latitudes, leading to longer and more frequent cold spells compared to El Niño or neutral years.
