Ahead of the Punjab’s Assembly elections 2027, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday held its ‘Badlav Rally’ in Moga, where Union Home Minister Amit Shah hinted that the party will contest the next Assembly polls in Punjab on its own, effectively ruling out an alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal. Addressing the gathering while wearing a saffron-coloured turban, Shah asserted that the BJP would form its own government in Punjab and his remarks are being seen as putting an end to speculation about a possible tie-up with the Akali Dal for the 2027 Assembly elections.
“The next government in Punjab will be of BJP,” Shah said, referring to the party’s performance in the 2024 Indian general election. He noted that the BJP had secured around 19% vote share in the state in the previous polls and the party is going to form the next government in Punjab.
During his address, Shah urged voters to give the BJP a chance in Punjab, saying the state needs a “double-engine government” to tackle issues such as drugs, unemployment and industrial slowdown, which he claims that Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) failed to look after.
