Several schools in Jalandhar including Apeejay and Cambridge reportedly received a threat email which was allegedly sent in the name of "Punjab hul Khalistan" also mentioned railway tracks in Amritsar, Ludhiana and Bathinda as a target. The email reportedly warned students against attending Independence Day parade on August 15.

More details are expected as authorities continue their probe.

Past threats

However, this is not the first time that such a threat has been reported in Jalandhar. Earlier too similar cases have emerged. The earlier emails also reportedly contained references to Khalistan related slogans and demands prompting security agencies to increase surveillance and launch cyber investigations to trace the senders and with repeated threat emails now targeting educational institutions in Jalandhar concerns over student safety and public security continue to grow however police officials have assured that strict action will be taken against those responsible and investigations into today’s threat are ongoing.

Other similar cases

Last month several religious places in Punjab along with Punjab Civil Secretariat in Chandigarh also received bomb threat emails.

Shri Devi Talab Temple in Jalandhar, Durgiana Temple in Amritsar, Mukteshwar Temple in Pathankot, Maisar Temple in Bathinda and Kali Devi Temple in Patiala along with Punjab Civil Secretariat in Chandigarh were at the target of this email and according to information received the email claimed that revenge would be taken for attack on Sri Darbar Sahib that took place on June 6, 1984 and the email also advised people not to travel between Ambala and Delhi on June 5 and June 6.

The email was sent by a group that calls itself "Khalistan National Army" an the message said they would target Punjab Secretariat at some point between 1:11 PM and 3:11 PM. When people in charge got this threat they quickly took action.

Expert opinion

Earlier taking about such threats experts pointed out that while some countries such as China have imposed stricter digital monitoring systems to curb such threats, India’s democratic framework and open internet ecosystem can sometimes be misused by malicious elements to spread fear through anonymous online platforms.
