A recent chain snatching incident case is reported from Urban Estate. The incident is indicative of increasing concerns about safety even in upmarket neighbourhoods and has led to immediate police action.

Chain snatched in seconds, CCTV footage reveals

As per reports, the crime was committed in the vicinity of Urban Estate Phase II, where a man succeeded in stealing a woman's chain within seconds as she was preparing to sit on an Activa scooter. The accused, who was standing close to the victim, kept an eye on the time when the woman was lost in thought and escaped on a motorbike with his fellow accomplice. The act was evidently taped by a CCTV camera, where two women ride in on an Activa and approach the victim, conversing with her, when the snatcher, who happens to be standing nearby, strikes as she turns to sit. The thieves, who appeared to be knowledgeable about the location, took advantage of the short moment of distraction, leaving the three shocked and the chain missing.

Victim's Statement

The victim, Lipsy Gupta, said she had gone to collect her mother's medical report from a laboratory close to Urban Estate Phase II. As their Activa was stopping to seat her mother, a man who was waiting outside the lab walked up and stole the chain from around her neck before they sped away on a motorcycle driven by another young man. Gupta said that the snatcher was waiting outside the lab and pounced on her as she was about to leave.

Lipsy Gupta in her complainant stated 

"We stopped to get my mother seated on the Activa. Suddenly, the man standing close by snatched my chain and fled with his partner on a motorcycle," she said.

Police response and investigation

Police Station Division Number 7 was immediately informed, and Investigating Officer Balwant Kumar reached the spot in 15 minutes of the incident occurring. "We checked CCTV cameras in the area after getting information. The footage caught the individual who stole the chain, but his motorcycle-riding abettor is not visibly identifiable. Statements are being recorded and searches of other cameras in the vicinity are being done. The accused will be arrested shortly," Kumar added.

Statement of investigating officer, Balwant Kumar

"We screened cameras and have the suspect's picture. Process to arrest both accused is being made," Kumar assured.
