In a case of environmental violation, more than 15 fully grown trees have been illegally cut down in Cheema Nagar Park, while several others have been severely lopped and disfigured. The felling reportedly took place during the night of October 5 and 6, and came to light on October 10 when residents and environmentalists visited the site.

According to local residents, the trees were felled by labourers hired by a resident whose house is under construction directly opposite the park. The resident is said to have admitted to commissioning the cutting of the trees.

Environmental activist Tejasvi Minhas has lodged a formal complaint with the Chief Minister’s Office, DIG Office, Deputy Commissioner and Municipal Corporation Jalandhar, seeking strict action against the violators. “This illegal cutting of trees is a direct violation of the Tree Preservation Policy for Non-Forest and Public Lands (2024) and the Punjab Protection of Trees Act (2025). Not only has government property been destroyed, but the timber was also reportedly sold for profit. This is an environmental crime that must be dealt with severely,” Minhas stated.

Residents have also raised concerns over the misuse of a public library located within the same park. The structure, inaugurated by former MP Mohinder Singh Kaypee in 2006, is allegedly being used for private purposes, with construction materials and furniture belonging to a nearby residence stored inside. No books or library furniture were visible during inspection, locals said.

The incident has drawn sharp criticism from environmentalists and civic groups, who say it highlights alarming administrative negligence. “If trees aren’t safe even inside parks, it shows how fragile our urban green spaces have become,” said a local resident.

Meanwhile, authorities are yet to issue an official response on the issue, but calls for action continue to grow as residents demand restoration of the park and accountability for the destruction of its green cover.
